A program of the Black Plant-Based Health Network
Program Overview
The Black Elders Plant-Based Meals-on-Wheels Program is a community-rooted initiative that supports the health, dignity, and cultural well-being of Black elders in Toronto.
The Program delivers nutritious, culturally familiar, plant-based meals directly to homebound elders, those with limited mobility, or those experiencing food insecurity—ensuring that aging members of our community can eat well, live well, and age with respect.
This Program was created in response to the disproportionate impact of food insecurity, chronic disease, and social isolation among Black seniors. Grounded in Afro-diasporic food traditions and evidence-based plant-based nutrition, the Program treats food as medicine, culture as care, and community as essential infrastructure.
Wholesome, Plant-Based Meals
Each meal is thoughtfully prepared with whole, minimally processed ingredients and seasoned with familiar Caribbean and African herbs and spices. Meals are designed to be nourishing, comforting, and suitable for elders managing conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
Culturally Relevant Food
Menus honour the tastes, memories, and culinary traditions of the African diaspora—because dignity includes being fed foods that feel like home.
Reliable Home Delivery
Meals are delivered safely and respectfully to elders’ homes, reducing barriers related to transportation, mobility, and physical limitations.
Human Connection
Beyond nutrition, the Program provides meaningful points of contact that help reduce isolation and reinforce that elders are seen, valued, and remembered.
Plant-based, whole-food meals are associated with improved cardiovascular health, better blood sugar control, reduced inflammation, and increased vitality—benefits that are especially important as we age.
For many elders, these meals offer a pathway to improved health without sacrificing flavour or cultural relevance.
The Black Elders Plant-Based Meals-on-Wheels Program creates impact on multiple levels:
We envision a future where no Black elder goes hungry, where aging is supported with care and cultural respect, and where food systems actively contribute to healing rather than harm.
This Program is a cornerstone of a broader commitment to food justice, elder wellness, and community self-determination.
Together, we can ensure that our elders are not only fed but also honoured.
